Honest to Goodness

Ginsberg has said that he originally wrote Howl solely for himself, so that he would have complete freedom to put his unfiltered thoughts on the page. I think that is important to know when reading Ginsberg’s poetry. He is truly not holding back, and I’ve always admired his honesty. In the poems Howl and America especially, Ginsberg brings attention to his communist ties, his avid drug use, his queer identity, and many other topics that most people are uncomfortable merely discussing.
