The difference between Sean Carter and the other gentleman who was attempting to profit from OWS is track record. This article says that as of this time no commitment has been made. Sean Carter has a history of supporting communities and giving to charity. Granted he is part of the 1% that the whole movement stands against but I think the benefit of the doubt must be given at least initially to see if that statement becomes a concrete stand. I don't believe OWS is against creativity and ingenuity and the word play that occurs on these t-shirts can be another mode of awareness. I cannot be against a positive message and some positivity being embraced by the hiphop community when the alternative messages current within the genre can be so deconstructive. Hip-hop has a wide base of listeners and if Sean Carter can help to get the base to tune in, pay attention, get involved and spread the word than he has done OWS a service. Should he profit it from it? The answer is no.

ReplyDeleteGood insights Obi. Do you think Jay-Z will be able to continue to be a supporting figure to a movement such as this now that he has signed on with the Obama campaign to help him secure the youth vote for the '12 election, or will his political commitments restrict what could've/would've been more vocal and financial involvement?
